Creative Critical Reflection
Question 1: How does your product represent social groups and issues?
While creating this video, we did not intend on representing any specific social groups or address any social issues. But if i had to make that classification, I would say it represents young adults exploring romance in a carefree manner and enjoying every moment of each other's company. The shots place them centrally and at eye level signifying gender equality and mutual respect between them. The pastel color outfits indicate a relaxed and modern vibe. Slow dissolves and gentle-push ins mirror the tentative yet respectful unfolding of their relationship. Being seated at a small table, the main characters occupy equal halves of the frame but the negative space between them suggests unspoken reservations. Though these observations can be made about this video we made this from a place of experiencing love. We wanted the viewer to feel the love through the frames: the deeply emotional and gentle bond between the main characters. We wanted to take the viewer on an emotional journey showing the stages and phases of young love. Contrary to grand gestures, this love is curious and thoughtful, conversational and gentle ; anchored in every day moments that become special when you share it with your loved one. Nature plays a key role in our video the first half of the video takes place outside in a park surrounded by trees, sunlight and flowers symbolizing that love is natural, raw, pure and perhaps even spiritual. We made a deliberate choice to showcase the couple as equals by choosing a gentle masculine and a vibrant female character where they are equally expressive and balanced in showing their feelings. There are no distinct gender roles, just two people loving and existing together. The soft washed out colors add to the romantic haze representing how memories of youth blend emotion in fact. Though the couple is heterosexual, the absence of strong labels or clear context makes the video universal. The open structure allows anyone to relate to the story regardless of gender sexuality or background this broad emotional connection makes her representation subtly inclusive. The video is centered on the sensation of love a portrayal of youth that is both romantic and genuine nostalgic yet human.
Question 2: How do the elements of your production work together to create a sense of branding?
In this music video every choice from visual style and sound design work in cohesion to establish the artist's brand identity which is youthful, intimate and culturally rooted. I have used a consistent visual palette which includes the color scheme of soft pastels such as pinks, cream, light blues, warm goldens and whites. This gentle palette aligns with the artist's overall aesthetic: warm, approachable and romantically nostalgic. The lighting that we used was the natural golden hour light in the park and the warm artificial light in the cafe which evoke an authentic feel that distinguishes the artist's visual from heavily stylized pop production videos. There are recurring motifs such as the acoustic guitar, the floral elements and the warm light itself. The guitar signifies the artist's singer-songwriter credentials and the floral element such as in the female lead's hair plus her floral dresses represent the freshness of love and how it blooms. This floral motif also echoes the blooming emotional arc of the song creating a brand association between the artists and themes of growth and tenderness. From the playful picnic, to an intimate moment in their own restroom, to an introspective cafe conversation; it mirrors the emotional journey of the artist's brand. By harmonizing color palletes and recurring visual motifs, a signature acoustic sound and a cohesive narrative arc, the video functions as a powerful piece of branding. Each element reinforces the artist's identity warm and genuine connection and his down-to-earth persona so that the viewers immediately recognize and remember the brand across all platforms.
Question 3: How do your products engage with the audience?
To discern how my products engage with audiences I have to know my audience. The audience for my music video are teens and young adults who are experiencing a new love or people recovering from trauma who have been in toxic relationships and this will serve as a reminder of healthy love for them.
Frequent close ups on the protagonist faces during key lyrical moments draw viewers into the character's internal world by foregrounding subtle expressions. The video fosters empathy as audiences see themselves in these universal emotions of anticipation and vulnerability.
Cuts are timed to the songs' emotional peaks, swelling vocal lines and instrumental climaxes aligning visual rhythm with musical effect. This synchronicity amplifies emotional impact making viewers more likely to replay the video and share it with others. In the cafe scene the camera occasionally holds a shot where the singer looks directly or just off camera as if speaking to the viewer. This creates the illusion of direct conversation building a sense of friendship or confident relationship between artist and viewer (a parasocial relationship). The handheld camera work and natural lighting convey a "behind-the- scenes" feel as if the audience is peeking into genuine moments rather than a staged performance. This transparency strengthens trust and affinity. The recurring flower in the singer's hair and the pastel hues and playground backdrop create instantly recognizable "Instagrammable" moments. Fans might feel encouraged to recreate these visuals in their own social posts and stories. The video's four mini scenes picnic, playground, cafe and night skyline; each tell a compact story. This structure allows viewers to clip and share favorite moments as short form content for Tiktok or Instagram reels. By layering emotional closeness and visually striking moments transforms a passive viewership into active engagement. Building a community around the song and strengthening the artists' fan base across all platforms.
Question 4: How did your research inform your products and the way they use or challenge conventions?
When we created this music video, we
followed a detailed plan grounded in a lot of research. We combined feedback
from viewers, a study of music video styles, and consideration of cultural
representation. This approach ensured the video both met audience expectations
and introduced fresh, new elements. Me and my teammate
each viewed clips from Paul Kim's “Me After You” and
IU's “Love Wins All.” We
liked the close-up camera work and ambient sounds like
rustling leaves and distant traffic which made the experience "immersive"
and "genuine." They appreciated the shaky camera as it felt like a
friend was filming, enhancing their connection to the artists. So, we used
natural camera movements and recorded environmental sounds using microphones,
instead of relying solely on studio audio. We analyzed successful
singer-songwriter videos and reviewed academic work about viewer positioning.
We identified recurring techniques like balanced shots for romantic duets, soft
color themes, and lyrics synchronized with visuals. Using these insights, we
ensured no character dominated the screen. They entered and exited the frame in
sync, matched each other’s eye lines, and shared equal screen time. We also
examined how South Asians are often portrayed in Western media and noted common
stereotypes like strict family expectations and one-dimensional cultural
identities. To counter this, we gave both characters independence and depth. Finally,
our post-production decisions were informed by platform data. We learned that
videos under three minutes with key “hook” moments have higher completion
rates. Therefore, we placed the first lyric text at 13 seconds and ensured each
scene concluded with a memorable moment, such as feeding an éclair or
a meaningful café gaze. This keeps viewers engaged and encourages them to
rewatch or share clips.
By basing our decisions on research, we did more than
finalize a style; it became the backbone of a music video that honors
traditional genre elements like structure and warmth while offering something
new through genuine camera techniques, balanced representation, and data-driven
pacing. Consequently, the video feels both comforting and innovative, showing
how thoughtful production can deeply engage viewers.
